THEMATIC AREAS

Our work spans various thematic areas. These include

EARLY WARNING AND CONFLICT ANALYSIS

Effective early warning has been widely recognized as worthwhile and necessary effort in mitigating conflict. Our early warning framework includes systematic data collection, analysis and/ or formulation of recommendations, including risk assessment and information sharing. LLC gathers information from diverse sources, analyses and issues indicator based Early Warning reports to relevant stakeholders.

We also undertake comprehensive mapping and analysis of conflicts that influence or undermine peace within and between States. The objective is to identify issues and actors that shape/influence events and outcomes in the short and medium term within the region and suggest appropriate policy responses.

DIPLOMACY AND FOREIGN POLICY

A rapidly changing East Africa, Africa and the world pose both challenges and opportunities. This programme aims to produce the highest quality research and policy analysis focused on crucial diplomatic and foreign policy challenges spanning the various geopolitical levels. It seeks to inform those who make and influence policy, as well as the public at large.

Migration: the ISS examines the causes and consequences of mass migration from and within Africa, and uses the results to inform policy and strategy in Africa and globally.

LEADERSHIP AND POLITICAL GOVERNANCE

Competent leadership and governance are recognized as essential ingredients of economic development and political progress. The core purpose of this programme is promote understanding and solutions to existing leadership and governance challenges in the East African region. The programme focuses on exploring ways of making leadership and governance equitable and inclusive.

Migration: the ISS examines the causes and consequences of mass migration from and within Africa, and uses the results to inform policy and strategy in Africa and globally.

ELECTIONS AND PARLIAMENTARY PROCESSES

Elections are the means through which citizens voice their preferences and choices.  Parliaments, on the other hand, play a fundamental role in setting up legislation and overseeing transparent governance processes. The Greater East Africa, Africa and the world as a whole continue to face contests relating to the integrity and credibility of elections and to challenges relating to parliaments playing their legislative and oversight roles. Our Electoral and Parliamentary Processes Programme supports knowledge sharing on best practices as well as activities that enhance the representative, legislative or oversight capacity of representative institutions in the governance process.

REGIONAL RELATIONS AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION

Regionalism and regional integration constitute an increasingly important research and policy space. Regional integration helps countries overcome divisions that impede the flow of goods, services, capital, people and ideas. These divisions are a constraint to economic growth especially in Africa and the East African region. This programe aims to promote an understanding of the different forms of regional cooperation, risks to regional integration and commitments to regional integration protocols

EXTRACTIVES IN THE REGION

East Africa and Kenya in particular, are increasingly developing into an important extractive province. For a couple of years now, new announcements of natural resource discoveries have been made in most of the countries in the region. Questions, however, remain about the “promised” benefits and the geostrategic implications of these discoveries. It is also not quite clear whether or not countries in the region are different in assuming measures that militate against possible failures associated with other experiences on the continent. This Programme supports actionable research and promotes platforms that support best resource governance practices

KENYA’S DEVOLUTION PROJECT.

In 2010, Kenyans voted to decentralize government through the establishment of 47 county governments. These devolved units have made substantial progress but also faced various challenges including limited capacity, knowledge and resources to effectively deliver the expected devolution dividends. This Programme promotes evidence-based analytical and capacity building solutions to emerging challenges to Kenya’s devolution project.

TOURISM TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENT

This Programme promotes evidence based research solutions and innovative ideas for the tourism industry and policy makers. Among the areas covered include current state of tourism, tourism trends, tourism intelligence, Futuristic tourism trends
